Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI) Data Center Closings 2010-2013 (see here for full list of closings from Data.gov) includes over 1,000 data centers.
There are a number of reasons why data centers are closing, including:
* The cost to support and maintain these data centers.
* They consume energy (100 billion kilowatt-hours, or 2.5% of total U.S. electricity consumption).
The current plan is to close 1,253 facilities by the end of 2015.
The government expects to save $3 billion within the next few years. But every agency is off to a slow start.
